ANNA W.

I remember the first issue of American Vogue under Anna Wintour's stewardship.

A beautiful full lipped Israeli model, Michaela, wore a bejeweled Christian Lacroix couture T-shirt with acid washed Guess jeans, wind blowing through her curls, laughing at a joke told by someone off camera.  I had never seen a Vogue cover that looked so free.

It was a time of change and promise, I was soon to finish up college in Indiana and depart for FIT in New York.  Michaela's fresh look and Anna Wintour's new take on fashion took a knife to the expectations I had. Change was good.

Anna always seemed a mysterious creature, demure but steely.  It wasn't until The Devil Wears Prada and The September Issue that I really got a peek into this enigma.

Here is a fabulous ode to Anna, shot by Mario Testino for French Vogue.

SANTA FE STYLE

Recently one of my closest friends came through LA on her way moving from San Francisco to Santa Fe.

Now I have had visions, and even written poetry about one day living there.  I am old woman, in my 90s with a dog and a jeep and a daily painting habit.  In the afternoons I go to a bar outside of town where I know everyone's name and they know mine.

In college I had a boyfriend from Santa Fe.  I remember landing in Albuquerque for the first time and being blown away by the stark beauty. I needed to write what I was feeling down.  I grabbed the nearest thing, a barf bag, and wrote.

The terrain was so different from where I grew up in Indiana.  Where Indiana was lush, New Mexico was desert; with soaring unexplainable rocks and plateaus and endless skies.

I returned a few times after that, falling in love more and more each time.  In contemplating an upcoming trip to New Mexico to see my friend, I've become enamored of Santa Fe influenced style.
